Freedom Prize 2020 - VOTE NOW!
The voting for Freedom Prize is now on! Until 12 April 2020, you can vote online for young person devoted to fight for freedom.
The Freedom Prize invites young people aged 15 to 25 to choose an inspiring person or organisation, committed to a recent, exemplary fight for freedom. The international jury made up of 24 young people of 13 different nationalities met in Caen, France on February 14 & 15, 2020 to select three personalities from 167 proposals received around the world. Here are the results:
Loujain Al Hathloul - Saudi Arabia, 39 years old
Loujain Al Hathloul is an iconic activist for women’s rights in Saudi Arabia. She was arrested for defying the ban on women driving cars and remains imprisoned in very troubling conditions
Father Pedro Opeka, Madagascar, 71 years old
For nearly 50 years, Father Pedro Opeka and his charity Akamasoa have helped some of the poorest people in Madagascar, working to build proper housing, schools and medical clinics.
Nasrin Sotoudeh, Iran, 56 years old
Nasrin Sotoudeh is a secular, feminist lawyer from Iran who actively opposes legislation imposing the wearing of the hijab. After an initial prison sentence between 2010 and 2012, she was sentenced in 2019 to 38 years in prison and 148 lashes.
From 9 March to 12 April 2020, an online vote accessible for 15-25 year olds from all over the world to express themselves and choose the laureate of the 2020 Freedom Prize.
In the times of self-isolation and quarantine we should not forget the individuals who fight for human rights and freedom. The time will come, we will win over the pandemic and our efforts will be re-born like a phoenix.
