Reclaiming Civic Space - first steps

Synchronising Terms: International Training-Seminar was held in Turin, Italy. The training-seminar is part of the multi-stage, long-term project "Reclaiming Civil Space: Promoting Youth Civil Space through Youth Work and Human Rights Education."

The training-seminar gathered 30 participants of various backgrounds in youth work and human rights education.

To achieve the aim of the training seminar, "to develop participants' understanding and competences to address shrinking spaces through human rights education and youth work in their local contexts and through international cooperation," trainers and facilitators of conducted various sessions. Throughout these sessions, participants worked on the Human Rights framework, phenomena of shirking spaces, with theoretical input from the trainers and facilitators. Moreover, the training-seminar created a space for sharing experiences on shrinking spaces, HRE practice, and advocacy of participating organizations: Human Rights Education Youth Network, Amnesty International Italy, Amnesty International Hungary, Amnesty International Moldova, Amnesty International Poland, and XELI.

After in-depth introductory sessions on shrinking spaces and its definitions, developments, implications, and experience-sharing, participants commenced local action planning. With the support and mentoring of facilitators on advocacy and activism, participated generated and fine-tuned ideas for local actions.

Training-Seminar was one of the core activities to reach the overall aim of the long-term project "to increase the networks' capacity to address the shrinking space for youth civil society through empowerment, advocacy, and campaigning. In addition, enhancing the participation of young people in democratic and civic life, and broaden and deepen political, civic and social participation on various levels". To reach this aim, the project is comprised of three additional stages: Blended learning course, Local Actions, and Evaluation Seminar. The project will work with over 50 young people in all partner countries in its frameworks.

The team introduced the concept of the publication, which consists of the practices and experiences of the participating organizations. The publication is one of the project's main outputs, and it is developed throughout the entire duration of the project.
